Brian
passed the qualifying examinations for fellowship of the
Institute of Life and Pension Advisors in 1992, winning
the trophy for the top student in Investment and Personal
Financial Planning. This qualification makes him a Certified
Financial Planner according to the Financial Planning
Institute of South Africa.
He
has also passed the membership examinations of the Johannesburg
Stock Exchange (1991), a Certificate in Advanced Taxation
from UNISA (1993) and completed a course in International
Portfolio management at the London School of Economics
in 1994.

about Brian Goodall
Education
Brian holds a BA Degree, a BA Honours Degree and an MA
Degree. He holds a postgraduate Diploma in Market Research
and Advertising from the University of South Africa. Brian
completed a membership examination of the Johannesburg
Stock Exchange through the University of the Witwatersrand
in 1991. He was joint winner of the Dudley Wood Memorial
Prize for best student. He passed the qualifying examinations
for Fellowship of the Institute of Life and Pension Advisors
in 1992, winning the FPS trophy for top student in Investment
and Personal Financial Management. He also has a certificate
in Advanced Taxation from Unisa, and has completed a course
in International Portfolio Management from the London
School of Economics. He has attended various management
courses, sales courses and sales management courses, including
courses at the Business Graduate Schools of the Universities
of Cape Town and the Witwatersrand.
Employment
Brian started his business career in 1966 with the Standard
Bank. After a short while he was transferred to the Economic
Planning Division of the bank, responsible for broad economic
research on the spatial development of South Africa. This
research was used to rationalize the banks branch structure.
He held the position of Assistant Economist when he left
the bank. He joined ESE Financial Services as Economics
and Statistics Manager in 1969 and left in 1970 to form
an economics and financial consultancy company, Craigheath
Associates along with two colleagues. He sold out after
five years and joined Syfrets Trust as Group Marketing
Manager, responsible for the marketing and sales activities
of the Trust Company, Participation Bond Company and Syfrets
Bank. In 1985 he started his own investment consultancy
company, Investment Management Services cc.
Public
Office
Brian won the Edenvale Parliamentary seat for the Progressive
Federal Party in 1979 and after losing the seat in 1987
regained it in 1989. While in parliament, he sat on the
Select Committee of Public Accounts, the committees of
Mineral and Energy Affairs, Labor, Trade Industry and
Tourism, Health and Welfare, Pension and Defense. He was
a member of the State Presidents Commission of Enquiry
into Fringe Benefits Taxation. In 1994 he was elected
to the Provincial Parliament of Gauteng.
Publications
Brian has contributed to various publications, including
a section on "The Life and Pension Industry" for the first
South African textbook on the "Role of Financial Intermediaries
in South Africa". He has also written articles on Investment
and Tax published in various South African Magazines and
newspapers. The South Africa Institute of International
Affairs published his thesis on Revolutionary Warfare
in South East Asia. He was asked to write a textbook on
Investment Planning for the Institute of Life and Pension
Advisors. He is co-author of the Momentum Tax and Investment
Easiguide.
